golden-gate-1

Last week I was in San Francsico as part of my day job responsibilities. I haven’t had any work related travel in the last two years so I was excited for the opportuntiy to visit my favorite city again.

San Francisco is home to many companies and entrepreneurs I admire. The whole week before the trip I was writing down notes and places I wanted visit. The plan was to make the most out of my time there and that left very little time to spend with the company that sent me there after 5pm.

Come my first night there however I was quickly put back in reality. With a long list of to do items and back to back days filled with all-day meetings there was little time to fulfill my SF tech fanboy wish list. What kills me most about this were the events happening in the city that I discovered while I was there.

Last week was the Web2.0 Expo. I had no plans to attend but later found out there was an open component of the event much like barcamp. On one night there was also an Ignite event and on a separate night there was a meet up for Identi.ca users and a tweetup later that night.

Sadly, I wasn’t able to make it to any of these events. You are probably thinking that I just blew the perfect opportunity, right? However I look at it simply as an opportunity cost. While these events were taking place I also was able to meet and build a working relationship with 40 of the most amazingly smart and talented coworkers I have ever met.

I spent my nights with coworkers I have never met before learning more about the company I work for and getting introduced to people and business lines I would have never met outside of that time. That is the story of work trips. In a company as large as the one I work for it is a rarity to meet some of the people you work with face to face. So to be given an opportunity like this to meet current and future leaders of the company and not take advantage of that would have been a waste.

I don’t know what would have come out of going to the San Francisco events however I do know I that I created a number of new friendships and I can’t wait to reconnection with them Monday morning to see how their weekend and travel home went. I will not forget the experience that I had there nor can I think of a more perfect work trip.

I am bummed that I didn’t even make it through a quarter of my to do. On paper, it may seem like I should have done more with my time there however it was just a small opportunity cost and right now I feel like I am coming out ahead.

I do not know when I’ll make it out to San Francisco again however I know those events won’t be the last. So next time I’m out West I will prep my to do list, scan for new activities and continue to consider the opportunity costs.

I wrote this a while back and it has been sitting in my inbox collecting dust (I often email myself notes as a way to organize and get things out of my head). I hate coming up with the short bio but I thought I needed this for a site. Thankfully I never had to submit it and as you can tell I had to stretch the truth… I barely ever blog here.

Rob Jensen is a Business Process Analyst for Wells Fargo Technology Information Group. He started his career with Wells Fargo in their Leadership Development Program after graduating from Iowa State University in 2004. Since moving back to Iowa from the Twin Cities Rob tries to stay active in the Des Moines community and regularly publishes his day to day activities on twitter, flickr and his personal blog.

For the less professional side of me and recently created this new short bio.

cube dweller, knowledge worker, wanna-be-blogger and internet tinkerer. connect with me elsewhere through http://robjensen.info

It seems more fitting and if I haven’t done so already I will be updating most of my web accounts with this new short bio.

I don’t claim to be an expert writer or even that my bios are great but I know they are important part of my online profile. On most sites the short bio is like a hand shake. Its not the full first impression but an extremely important part of it. Your bio needs to get to the point, show your character and leave an impression. If it doesn’t do that… well back to the writing board.

twestival

Yesterday while working away I added a Twestival Badge to my blog. Twestival in a nutshell is a tweet-up for charity and in this case charity: water. More info about this on Lava Row’s blog.

At any rate I uploaded one of the Twestival badges to my flickr account and I’m sharing the code to display the badge on your own site:

<a href=”http://desmoines.twestival.com/”>
<img alt=”Twestival” border=”0″ src=”http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3412/3261482472_8fd88629a7_o.png”></a>

Feel free to use or if you would like go to the Twestival site and browse their their many other badges here (links to a zip file).

Lastly, thank you Nathan for organizing the Des Moines Twestival and hopefully I will see many of you there!

Managing The Edge

3 Feb 2009

I recently added a new podcast to my normal weekly rotation. What excites me most about this podcast is that it is produced out of Des Moines, Iowa by a couple of close contacts I have met through twitter/blogging.

managingtheedge144x144

The podcast is called Managing The Edge and launched earlier this year. It is hosted and produced by Doug Mitchell of CreateWowMedia and Andy Brudtkuhl of 48Web. Topics focus on helping listeners become more findable and engagable on the web through social media.

The podcast recently released its 4 episode and I have been really impressed with how polished the podcast sounds. Doug and Andy have a great balance and direct the conversation to applicable to anyone getting started with their social media campaign (in short, not just for businesses).

Managing the Edge is recorded every Friday at 9:30am CT and if you are avaiable you can watch it live from their site.

generation-iowa

I am very happy to announce that I am now blogging for Generation Iowa! I actually started writing for them at the beginning of January however I was on a crunched timeline to get my first batch of articles out and I have neglected to post an announcement here until now.

This is a great opportunity for me both professionally and personally. My blog posts will focus around “my career” and I will be sharing what I have learned through my experiences and training while climbing the corporate ladder. At the same time this begins my adventures in freelance work and starts out 2009 right with a great pipeline of blogging work.

I am extremely thankful for this opportunity and look forward to sharing my thoughts with the Generation Iowa community. If you are interested in career tips that span from writing a resume to managing multiple projects come checkout my posts along with the other great writers behind the site. And if you have topics you would like me to cover don’t hesistate to write me a note on either site.

Our friends in Kansas City, who hosted the first Highlight Midwest, are hard at work organizing a Startup Weekend. They recently launched the official site and tickets are now for sale at $40 a pop. The whole event will take place on April 24 through 26 and as a warning seating is limited so move fast.

I have never attended a Startup Weekend before but I am very excited to have one take place so close to home. Past Startup Weekends have spun off companies such as Skribit and regardless of companies actually launching after the weekend hackfest this is the perfect networking opportunity if you are looking for specific skill sets to compliment your own.

I still need to read up on how a Startup Weekend works however I am excited to be able to participate and I am looking forward to the roadtriip to Kansas City. If you are interested in attending check out the site and if you are from Des Moines and plan to attend let me know as I’ll be looking for someone to carpool with and split costs.

A while back (last week, or two… who knows) I twittered some thoughts for putting together a StartupCamp in Des Moines. The idea received a lot of positive feedback and sparked even more questions.

So what exactly do I mean by StartupCamp? Simply put it is BarCamp but focused on all things that should be on the minds of startup companies. And what is BarCamp? BarCamp is a community driven conference (or unconference) where the attendees are also speakers. There is no true keynote, just great minds gathering to share ideas, network and collaborate. If you haven’t attended one it is truly a thing of beauty and an example of organized chaos at its finest.

You probably still don’t know what StartupCamp is but that is alright because I don’t either but I do know it has value. Planning StartupCamp is really as simple as setting up the right environment and from there organized chaos will do the rest. So here is what needs to get done:

  • Lock in a date
  • Lock in a location
  • Provide materials for participants/presenters (projectors, tables, chairs, food, drinks)
  • Find sponsors to cover costs
  • Promote the hell out of it (and because of the focus make sure subject matter experts in your network are aware)

Right now I am looking for feedback on the date. From there the rest of the pieces will start coming together (so i hope). So let me start by proposing mid to late February. Help me narrow down the date and for those of you interested in helping plan out the rest please let me know.

The Iowa Web Awards were held last week along with Ignite Des Moines at Impromptu Studio. Unfortunately I was not able to make it to the big event but from my monitoring the happenings on ustream it looked like on hell of a night. And with nearly 80 people, beer from Olde Main Brewing Co and an egg catapult who would expect less?

The Iowa Web Awards are Iowa’s version of the Webby Awards. All of the categories, nominations, and votes were from the community. This was all orchestrated online and more specifically through twitter. From blog there was a little bit of flare up concerning the true reach and marketing however given this was year one I hope to see this concept continue to grow. At the event the winners were announced and given a small badge to take home and a later was created to be used on their website. The full list of winners can be found on the Des Moines Register (who didn’t at first but is now linking out to the winners).

Shameless plug: I was somehow nominated for an award for Best Twitter-er and Microblink was up for two. I was honored and surprised to find out myself so to those who voted for me and to the person(s) who nominated me and Microblink THANK YOU!

Ignite Des Moines, the mainstage for the night, is an interesting concept. Before the day of the event participants submitted ideas for short, timed presentations. Presenters were given strict time constraints and number of slides. And after the presentations were complete additional decks were presented for anyone in the audience to get up and speak to.

Overall the night looked like a blast and demonstrates the potential in our growing Des Moines community and the power of Twitter to create real and lasting relationships. I’m looking forward to seeing these events coming back next year and big thanks to Impromptu Studio for hosting it!

Great things are happening in the Midwest. In Des Moines the creative class is booming and through events like BarCamp I have had the opportunity to connect to many others who have accomplished the same in their city. From this connecting and collaboration, contacts from across Kansas City, Omaha and Des Moines are working together to organize a new event titled Highlight Midwest.  The marketing blurb for this event states:

Highlight Midwest showcases the entrepreneurs, innovators, and early-adopters using web technology to grow their businesses, advance their careers, and enrich the regional economy in new ways.

Many states in the Midwest have long held the title of “fly over states”. The goal of this event is to show what we really have to offer. This will be done by highlighting all of the great things that are happening and have been accomplished in the Midwest. And the event itself has been separated into two different formats to accomplish this:

The first part of the day will include focused highlights. This will include demos and presentations of the many projects taking place in each city. This may include demonstrating a web application a start up company is working on to presentations on how companies are leveraging social media to grow their business. The details for this format have not been finalized at this time however if you are interested in presenting please let me know so we can get it on the site.

The second part of the day is a formal event held at the Kauffman Center. There a representative from each city will present how the web is changing their cities for the better and how new opportunities for innovation are expanding the importance of web-based technology in the Midwest.

The contacts from each city are working hard to generate interest and plan out the details of the event. Much props to the Kansas City crew for taking lead on many of the items and overall I’m extremely excited for the whole event.

As of the right now my priorities are in getting the word out. Traveling to Kansas City isn’t a drop of the hat type of event for anyone I know of so to ensure there is a good showing in participants and highlights I need help spreading the word. If you know of a company or persons that would be a perfect fit for presenting at this event let them know about it. Point them to this blog post or better yet to the Highlight Midwest website. If you are interested in attending or presenting please also register for the event through the site so we can have an idea of who many people will be there. And as always your tweets and blog posts about the event are always appreciated. ;)

This weekend the BarCamp Des Moines planning team was hard at work promoting the event and spreading the word to bloggers and other technology focused groups. We are getting very close the event and there is still much work to be done however the excitement and buzz is there.

To start capturing the buzz around us we have setup a number of accounts to increase our web presence. Much credit goes out to Aaron Webb (@webboy) for all of his hard work, check it out on the links below:

We will be providing additional updates on the blog as frequently as we can. If you have questions hit us up on any of the sites above and we will try to respond as quickly as possible!

On a side note, we also the discussed the need to do some video. If you are open to volunteering your expertise and can help us create an intro video for the site hit me up and lets get this ball rolling!

Okay, last side note. Omaha BarCamp is rocking it with a beautiful site. We may or may not have started the sites above based on what they are doing. Check them out at http://twitter.com/barcampomaha and http://barcampomaha.org/.
